Romans 13:1-14
18 September 2022
Often when we read in Romans 13:8, Owe no one anything, except to love each other… we think it is about not going into debt. While staying out of debt is in the Bible, that is not the point of the verse. Instead the verse is about keeping short accounts, especially with those whom we owe things like honor, respect, homage, etc. Another way of saying it is, do not withhold these things. Among those qualities is the love of our neighbors. The transformed life compels us to love our neighbors as ourselves, by the power of love that God’s Spirit in us supplies to every transformed person. So then part of the fruit of the transformed life is the ability to love everyone, even politicians. And no one seems more surprised about that than the modern church.
